Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the state energy company Orlen paid a Dubai intermediary. At the same time, it received no guarantees or collateral. Tusk noted that the deal took place when the company was headed by Daniel Obajtek. He is a member of PiS, the party of Tusk’s political rivals. Obajtek demanded that the issue be resolved in court, calling the case political persecution.

The company also lost money on idling and chartering tankers for oil that was never delivered. Orlen’s total losses amounted to $378 million.
